Two States Wedding

Two States Wedding

Two States Wedding

One wedding that instantly comes to my mind whenever someone mentions the Two States movie is of Shruti and Ankit. While their families came from two different cultures, they mingled with each other very well without the usual shenanigans . While the bride was a Tamil Brahmin the groom hailed from Gujrat. They had a four day celebration in western suburbs with Sangeet, Mehandi, Wedding and Reception on all separate days. Just like the Two states movie the wedding venue was a temple in Dahisar, Vithal Rukhumai Mandir. A modern multi-story temple with its own banquet albeit not an ancient one with granite pillars.

Their functions kick-started with  Sangeet function in an open lawn setup which was full of enthralling and fun-filled performances. The photographs certainly do a better job of describing the excitement of the day. Shruti wore kurta styled lehanga designed by her friend Namrata who was a fashion designer while Ankit wore a sherwani.

The wedding day started early in the morning. While the bride started to get ready at 6 am, the baraat started at Ankit’s house at 6.30 am and the baraat reached the venue by 7.30 am. Ankit and Shruthi got married by both Tamilian and Gujrati traditions. For her Tamil wedding, the bride wore a pure silk Kanjivaram saree and accessorized her look with a stern gold Kamarbandh and multi-strand gold maathapatti patterned with beads. Ankit wore a traditional South-Indian groom’s outfit, a white dhoti and angavastram and complimented Shruti perfectly. Their wedding was full of traditional ceremonies, one of which included, the “Oonjal”, in which the couple are made to sit on a swing which is rocked gently. The swing’s oscillating motion is a message to the couple that they must stay strong together during both, the challenges and the joys of life.

The most emotional part of this delightful marriage was the Kannika Dhanam. An emotional wedding ritual practiced in South Indian culture, in which the father of the bride gives away his beloved daughter to the groom. Every stunning photograph taken at this wedding speaks of the efforts we put to nail the lighting and bring out the story. We wanted to give it a warm tone which was difficult considering the bad lighting in the hall. So we got cinema lights and bounced them from the ceiling at every corner and that did the trick.

Let’s have a look at a few of their precious moments captured so perfectly!  Let us start with the wedding day.

Destination Wedding in Noor-us-Sabah Palace

Destination Wedding in Noor-us-Sabah Palace

Destination Wedding in Noor-us-Sabah Palace

It is not everyday you get a chance to cover a destination wedding and when it happens in a palace, the excitement is through the roof. Isha a copywriter with an advertising agency in Delhi was set to marry Rachit, who was pursuing PhD in Sweden. There wedding was to take place in Bhopal, the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. As beautiful and old the city is, its culture and traditions are the quintessential representative of the Hindustani culture. It’s Mughal heritage, evident in its cuisine and iconic dwellings and places of worship in Old Bhopal like Taj-al-Masajid; and one of the largest man-made lakes the Bhojtal built by Parmara Raja Bhoj in 11th century along with various Palaces of the Nawab era, lend it a surreal charm. This beautiful city continuing its rich traditions is now a great centre of arts and literature and a premiere hub for education in Madhya Pradesh. If you ever visit this peaceful city, a walk uphill the Shamla Hills and down the Upper-lake along the Boating club is a must. Here you can enjoy a majestic and serene view of the city skyline with small hillocks adorning the skyline with their curves. You can pass hours sipping tea at the beautiful high-garden of Noor-us-Sabah Palace enjoying a majestic view of the lake with a picture-perfect sunset.  You may not have heard of Bhopal as destination for weddings but it is a beautifully charming place to be with plenty of options of great in-expensive hotels for your guest and royal palaces like Noor-us-sabah or Jehan Numa Palace as the ideal venue for your wedding! Not to mention Bhopal is well connected with every part of India and its central location makes it all the more lucrative and convenient. So you get our drift, don’t you? We love Bhopal!

Our first stop was Rachit’s grandparent’s bunglow where we were welcomed by the melodious Shehnai musicians who sat on the front porch. With white walls and a lovely garden with a mango tree, it was a house straight from the story-books. As we entered it where Rachit’s brother Arpit was practicing dance with women folks for one of the performances for the next day’s Sangeet night. The next day early morning started with the Tilak ceremony where the bride’s brother came with gifts and the two families bonded well, there was also a small pooja. The women folk sat singing and playing the dholak. The afternoon light filtered through the white and blue pandal with many candid moments made for some compelling photographs. After the ceremony, everyone assembled in the garden and we captured group photos of the family. You can only say one word when you look at the group photos — picture perfect family!

After a quick time-out and a lazy afternoon of a short nap the sun set down, the sky turned darker and a night of great revelry began. Lovely women huddled up in groups to get their hands colored with Heena  while the men cracked jokes and cherished old friendships over drinks and food. With the arrival of the bride and groom the cousins sprung up into action and they took centre-stage. Everyone from masiji to grandparents, from friends to chachaji and even parents danced and sang through the night.  The highlight of the event being Arpit’s Dadaji’s poem and his words of wisdom. Isha being an expert Kathak dancer delivered a captivating and enthralling performance. Words will fall short but the photographs will truly tell the tale of this beautiful night.

The next day early in the morning we headed out to Bhojtal, the grand lake for a small photo-session exclusively with the bride and groom. The bride was still half asleep as she barely had any sleep after the eventful Sangeet night. But as we warmed up, they soon started enjoying it and they truly cherished getting up in the morning for some amazing photographs. Post the shoot the groom got into whites and everyone had a gala time applying Haldi to him. By the end of the function everyone was yellow and we were richer with so many beautiful photographs. There were only a few hours left for the evening when ‘Dulhe miya’ will ride the ‘ghodi’ and ride to his beautiful destiny which awaited him. It started with groom getting ready which was followed by ‘Sehra-bandi’. After that the band and entire party left for Noor-us-Sabah where they stopped just out side the gates and gathered for the baraat. After quick refreshments the banjo, the saxophone and trumpet all glared and friends and family danced in the cacophony of sounds till they arrived at the door-step where they were welcomed by the bride’s family. The garden was laid with beautiful arrangement of the stage for reception and an English sit-out setup in the high-garden of Noor-us-Sabah. After the reception the ceremonies of the wedding started in a beautiful flower Mandap by the pool. A beautiful setting along with the cold night of February it was a beautiful wedding and the bride and groom looked amazing in their traditional attires. It was a late-night wedding where the women sang emotional folk-songs, hilarious self composed numbers on Bollywood music and teases which kept every one entertained throughout the wedding. Meanwhile groom’s shoes were stolen and he had to pay the sister-in-laws their demanded price! Now we will leave you with photographs to recreate the entire wedding for you.

So if you are planning a wedding in Bhopal, we would love to capture it for you and give you a lifetime of beautiful picture-perfect memories!

Sindhi Wedding in Nagpur

Sindhi Wedding in Nagpur

We love bringing stories from all parts of the country as much as we love shooting them. But, the wedding season really keeps us on our toes that we often miss out sharing some really great stuff due to new weddings coming on our way. Struggles of a Wedding Photographer! (Sighs) . This one is about an year ago, when Vishesh and Priyanka got married at Sun and Sand hotel in Nagpur as per sindhi rituals. They celebrated their wedding anniversary a month ago.  Priyanka, a CA hails from Indore while Vishesh is an IT engineer who works in U.S, belonging from Nagpur. Thus, the destination Nagpur.  How the photographs do the major talking for the gorgeous bride and the good-looking groom on their wedding, you shall spectate here.

Priyanka and Vishesh had separate ladies “Sangeet” functions. We covered the groom’s Sangeet function which was clubbed with his thread ceremony.  While everyone were having a blast, we were on our toes capturing all the action as real as it could get. That involved going frighteningly close to people dancing frantically. We love the unhindered candid action shots and to get them right we often had to push ourselves off the limits. The next day the baraat started late afternoon in the blazing heat of May in Nagpur and it was excruciatingly hot! We were really surprised with the enthusiasm with which everyone danced in the blazing sun. Photographs don’t come out well when the sun is high in the sky, it casts ugly dark shadows on the faces. So we waited for the baraat to pass through the shade of a tree and then sprung to action. It is important to see how the light is falling on the subjects. Sometimes even during the bright sunny day because of light reflecting from a nearby light colored wall or glass buildings, the light can come at just the right angle. It is also a good idea to use a flash along with a ND filter. Okay, enough of technalities now, Right (blushes)!

After the baraat was welcomed the groom headed for bride’s room where a small ceremony was performed. The room was filled with laughter with women cracking and teasing the couple throughout the ceremony. Thereafter they proceeded together to Mandap and we will surrender you to the photographs of the day to narrate the rest of wedding.

Priyanka looked like a beautiful “Red-dream” in her stunning  Red Lehenga, matching it with golden jewellery whereas Vishesh looked suave in his White Sherwani.

After the wedding, there was a reception ceremony where the bride and groom made a fashionably late entry, hand in hand. And as soon as they got on stage the sky burst into fireworks and the stage was lit with pyro-works. By the way, it was really hard to believe that this stunning couple had an arranged marriage, because their chemistry reveals that they know each other since ages altogether. We had an amazing session with our enthusiastic couple who took out time after reception for some beautiful photographs in the hotel premises. The recreation of a ball dance and a date for some romantic fairy tale photographs paid off all our hard-work.

If you wish to know how we shot these photographs. Comment in the section below and we will disclose our technique.

Smita & Gary : Couple Shoot in Mumbai

A couple shoot in the action packed city of Mumbai has to be amidst a lot of action. Mumbai is a city which never sleeps and life goes on from the early hours in the morning to midnight.

This time we tried to do something different. So, we juxtaposed the couple against the usual morning scenes at some of the unique & iconic places in Mumbai – Marine Drive, Gateway of India, Ballard Estate & Express Freeway. What we came across were the early morning jogs, people travelling to work, people working hard to earn their livelihood & simply onlookers staring as we were at our work. Each frame is unadulterated, and our approach was documentary & story telling. Hope you all like it! Scroll down for the photo-set below!

This wouldn’t have been possible without Smita & Gary, and their sporty spirit. So thank you two, you guys were amazing!

Kannadiga-Bangalore wedding

Kannadiga-Bangalore wedding

Kannadiga-Bangalore wedding

On 16th May, 2016 we covered Jyotika & Ravi’s wedding in Bangalore as a part of a promise which we made when Jyotika won in our Facebook contest for free wedding photography. She was super excited and could barely sleep the night she came to know of results.

She visited our boutique in Mumbai with lot of excitement which made us realize how our work can make someone so happy. This was a huge responsibility and it made us more determined to deliver her our best.

So it was decided that Anupam and Sunny would cover her wedding in Bangalore. On arrival at Bangalore airport, Anupam was gripped with Nostalgia where he had spent more than 2 years of his life fresh after graduation. When we arrived at the venue – Saraswati Convention Centre at Magadi Road, Jyotika had started to get ready. At the entrance we met her father who was visibly happy and told us that he loved photography himself. When we met Jyotika her fears were put to rest, whether we would really make it for her wedding.
The day was set for an early morning marriage with traditional Hindu customs and rites as prevalent in Karnataka. As a matter of fact the customs on groom’s side were a bit different compared to the bride as they belonged to different parts of the same state. India’s diversity in culture is clearly evident in its weddings. Every place has its own set of customs and traditions and it also depends on the community to which one belongs. This very diversity makes our job as documentary photography so interesting. For all its diversity the common threads of similar beliefs are also well reflected in many customs – for eg. Kashi Yatra, Kanyadan, the Pheras, the Promises, Mangalsutra, Antarpat etc. Our experience with the richness and diversity of Indian weddings can very well form a good subject for PhD research.
Like all Indian weddings there are a number of functions that happen in a Kannadiga wedding. Jyotika chose to wear different Kanjeevaram and Silk sarees for her functions adorned with elegant and simple Gold jewellery . For the wedding she looked splendid in a cream white and orange Kanjeevaram while Ravi looked every bit the proverbial tall, dark and handsome in the traditional silk dhoti with zari border with white and gold pagdi. During the fun couple shoot the ladies quipped to see his abs which made him blush.
As it was a early morning wedding we were happy to start the day early with beautiful early morning hours perfect lighting for photographs. We had great fun shooting their wedding and photos came out just as kickass as we had hoped.

A week later while we were shooting Ameya and Anuradha’s wedding (next on the blog) in Mumbai we met Jyotika’s dad again and he couldn’t help but exclaim, “You guys are shooting everywhere!”

We tried to keep the photographs as documentary, candid and non intrusive in nature as we could and we hope you like them. If any of you is getting married in Bangalore and would like to hire us, give us a shout. We are in absolute love with Bangalore and its culture. In August we would be covering one more wedding in one of the most beautiful venues of Bangalore for weddigns — Ganjam Mantapa, near Bull Temple.

But for now just experience the photographs from this elegant and simple South Indian Wedding and let us know in the comments how you find the photographs.

Bihari-UP wedding, Nagpur

Bihari-UP wedding, Nagpur

Bihari-UP wedding, Nagpur

Surabhi is Shwetabh’s sister who is my junior from Photography Club at BITS Pilani and having recently joined our team the responsibility of her wedding photography naturally came to us. As I was shooting a batch mate’s wedding from college in Puri along with Winston, Ajinkya and Omkar, Sunny and Prasad traveled to Nagpur to capture this simple and beautiful wedding. Having recently acquired entire set of new Nikon gear and Sigma Art series lenses, Prasad was particularly excited to rough them out. Surabhi is a chemical researcher in Nagpur while Prashant works in Germany as a software engineer. Their pre wedding celebrations viz. Haldi, Engagement  and Mehandi happened at their bunglow whereas the wedding took place at ‘Lamba Celebrations Banquet‘ in Nagpur.

The wedding festivities lasted a full three day starting with Engagement and culminating with bride leaving her house to a new home. After exchanging rings Prasad and Sunny took the couple around the neighborhood for a photo-shoot though it was already dark and boy they managed some great photos despite it being dark. Surabhi’s hadi was more like Holi with turmeric which didn’t even spare Prasad and Sunny. They swore to not wear good clothes to a Haldi ever. I could understand the true extent of their temperament only when I saw the photographs, despite covering more than 30 weddings we still get surprised by the diversity of the customs and traditions in India and how all that plays at its best in any Indian wedding. Weddings are truly the highlight and summary of the rich variety of our traditions.

On the day of the wedding Prashant made his entry in a car adorned with flowers and the whole baraat where people danced with rapture to their hearts content. The wedding went through the entire night after and by the time Prasad and Sunny came out shooting the Bidaai they realized it was already morning!

We loved the images from this wedding, we could see the entire story of the unfolding through them and it looks so beautiful, that we feel is the true test of good photography, to be able to live a moment through photographs.
